Reunion Island
The Seychelles is full of breathtaking natural beauty. It has only a small population but the country covers a vast area made up of 115 islands and islets, only about 20 of which are inhabited.
Desroches Island, which is part of the Amirantes archipelago, is a 30-minute flight from the international airport on the main island of Mahé. Desroches is 4 miles long and just over 500 yards across at its widest point. The Seychelles archipelago is best known for its crystal-clear lagoons, its lush vegetation and especially its coconut groves, its fine sandy beaches, its weathered rocks and its colourful marine life, and Desroches has them all.
The climate is tropical, with daytime temperatures ranging from 28° to 31°C. Sea temperatures vary between 24° and 29°C.
The main island of Mahé, 600 miles north of Madagascar, is named after Mahé de Labourdonnais, one-time Governor of Mauritius, although the Seychelles archipelago was first discovered by Vasco de Gama in the 15th century.
Like Mauritius, the Seychelles officially became a British colony in 1814, before becoming independent on 29 June 1974.
